Here is a set of causal models. The most primitive would be the models that arise in conversations, before drawings.
Next would have been the addition of diagrams or paintings, fit for finger pointing and conversations,
Much later, a huge leap designed in the 20th century, causal loop models or diagrams.
System dynamics may be thought of as a language to understand real world systems.
Designed experiences and experiments can be seen as as a way for humans to "listen to systems" as they communicate back to us. We can now talk to one another about systems in this new language. There are a large number of methods and tools that are built up from the basic grammar of system dynamics.
Whenever we get mixed up and confused using our more sophisticated tools and methods, then we should go back and "diagram our sentences" in systems dynamics, especially the primary language of causal loop diagramming.
To see this sequence in a larger context of tools, models, and methods see Models for Seeing Systems.
